Google leads legacy Voice phone service out behind the barn, two shots ring out

Time to move, but be warned – not everything has survived the 'modern experience'


It appears that today's victim of the Chocolate Factory axeman is legacy Google Voice for personal accounts.

To be fair, and despite Google's apparent delight at killing off services, this one has been on the cards for a while, certainly since the company overhauled the user interface in 2017 with its "modern experience."

However, some users have stuck with the legacy web version of Voice despite warnings that bits of it would stop working in 2020. In July, the company said in a not-at-all-threatening manner:

"If you are not already using the new website UI, now would be a great time to get accustomed to it."

The legacy web version of Google Voice is to be phased out from the middle of next month and, in a manner familiar to those who have spent the last few years grumbling over what Microsoft did to Skype, not everything is going to be carried over to what Google calls "the new experience".

For example, the Do Not Disturb Timer is going away, as is Ring Scheduling. You'll need to update to a full numbered Voice account for voicemail-only. Being a US service, credit balances will be converted to US dollars when the balance drops below 0.50 and auto-recharging in other currencies will be disabled. Call Notes, which were removed from the legacy web version in 2020, will be wiped after 31 March 2022.

Also potentially painful for holdouts is the fate of Carrier Call Forwarding, which is missing from Google's brave new world. "It will still be possible to forward calls from another carrier to your Google Voice number," said Google in a message to users, "however, all carrier forwarded calls from your linked number will go directly to voicemail."

Register reader Anthony Remmers drew our attention to the retirement, and noted that Google was euthanising "yet another useful feature that I regularly use."

"GV has been on life support for years," he added, "and I was hoping the mothership was just too busy to look this way and put the old girl down."

The changes don't affect Google Voice for Google Workspace. However, while the new Voice has a few whizzy features of its own, the fact that not all of legacy Voice has survived the transition will frustrate some users.

As Remmers observed: "Seems like I should've learned years ago to not depend on obscure use cases of free services." ®

The US Federal Communications Commission is considering imposing stricter rules requiring telecommunications carriers to report data breaches to customers and law enforcement more quickly.

Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel drafted a document outlining the new proposal to strengthen the FCC’s powers for disclosing data breaches and leaks to customers and federal agencies of “customer proprietary network information.” The updated rules, published this week, would keep the FCC in line with other federal and state data breach laws, she said.

At the moment, companies have to wait seven business days before they can disclose a data breach to their customers. Under the new plan, the waiting period will be scrapped altogether so people can be notified sooner.

AWS Glue is a serverless data integration service for preparing data for subsequent processing. But thanks to an internal misconfiguration, Orca Security researchers were able to obtain more information than should have been allowed.

Although the companies faced the highest attrition rates in three years and were forced to raise hiring targets, increasing use of technology during the pandemic has given a wide range of verticals a reason to shift from data centres to the cloud. In turn, the pandemic's subsequent digitisation race has presented the IT consulting companies with a thriving market.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will hike capital spending by a nearly third in 2022 to build out production capacity in the expectation that demand for chips keeps flooding in.

The financial outlay is estimated to jump to as much as $44bn this year, up from $30bn in the previous fiscal, and was outlined today when the company reported results for its calendar Q4 with revenues up 5.8 per cent year-on-year to $15.74bn and net profit up 16.4 per cent to $6bn.

The top line was driven by demand for semiconductors manufactured with TSMC's 5nm process technology. This contributed to 23 per cent of TSMC's total wafer revenue in the quarter, while those made using its 7nm process accounted for a further 27 per cent. These advanced technologies therefore made up half of TSMC's total wafer revenue during the quarter.

"The organizer of the group, a 36-year-old resident of Kyiv, together with his wife and three acquaintances carried out cyberattacks on foreign companies," cops alleged in a characteristically blunt statement (in Ukrainian).

They claimed "more than 50" companies were targeted by the alleged gang, causing damage estimated at "more than one million US dollars."
