Investors toss $5m to UK firm: Just keep making that White Space kit
Thursday, 06 September 2012 21:29

Cambridge-based developer of White Space kit Neul has raised another $5m to keep it operational while hardware improves, and Ofcom gets round to making its devices legal.

The money follows the $12.8m which Neul has been spending since June last year, and comes from various investors including Mistui & Co. The money should enable Neul to ramp up production of its White Space radios, turning out thousands of boxes for deployments rather than the tens which are being used in trials around the world.

Neul claims demand is outstripping supply for its radios, which make use of the Neul-designed-but-publicly-shared Weightless

FCC to TV broadcasters: Ready, set ... give your spectrum up
Friday, 07 September 2012 23:28

The FCC is poised to publish the mechanism by which US TV broadcasters will be able to swap some of their allocated radio spectrum – which they mostly received for free – for a little cold, hard cash come 2014.

The move of asking broadcasters to give some spectrum up was expected, but The Washington Post reckons the FCC will be laying out the details of how it will actually work later today , including the auction of TV frequencies scheduled for 2014. The proposals will be put up to a vote on 28 September - allowing for 21 days of

The use of wireless charging might justify Nokia's teaser video , which claims "Things are about

Apple: You'd want hi-fi streamage from us, not poor-people Wi-Fi audio
Wednesday, 29 August 2012 22:03

Apple is reportedly working with hi-fi manufacturers to stream music over-the-air directly to audio equipment - without the need for Wi-Fi.

The Mac maker already licenses its AirPlay protocol, which streams music and video over a network, to the consumer electronics industry. Apple's proprietary stack is a counterpart to the open and more widely adopted DLNA streaming specification. However, both require an 802.11 x wireless network.

According to the Telegraph , Apple has developed some point-to-point communications for hi-fi manufacturers, whose playback electronics have sprouted wireless network reception in recent years. The new AirPlay Direct system will allow listeners to

OFT makes special exemption for bumpkins' wayleave charges
Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:24

Getting faster broadband connections in rural areas remains a bugbear for many of the locals who live in the harder-to-reach parts of Blighty. So clarification from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) on competition law relating to wayleave rates has been unsurprisingly welcomed by landowners in the countryside today.

The regulator has published a short-form opinion [PDF] , which was sent to the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), that it said clarified exactly how competition law was applied to the recommendation of a rate to be charged by their members for allowing broadband
