Paris Metro brings a bit of style to NFC

The Paris Metro will be getting new payment cards next year, cards which pave the way to board-by-bonk phones by being compatible with the NFC standard.

Not that the Paris transport authority, the STIF, is saying much about the technical capabilities of the new card. The French are much more interested in the fact that it was designed by Philippe Starck, who not only chose the colours and layout, but also decided the card would be presented vertically to bring "energy" to the validation process:

iPhone 5 rumoured to be packed with pay-by-bonk tech

Rumours - fuelled by comments from a MasterCard chief and an iOS developer - suggest that this year's next-gen iPhone could be packing a wireless pay-by-wave chip.

The built-in near-field communication (NFC) gizmo would allow the iPhone 5 to make contact-less payments at the tills - a system that has been around on Android phones via Google Wallet for a while, but has yet to take off with customers. That could all change if Apple starts to push the tech.

Ofcom: UK broadband speed on the up as punters' packages swell

Average broadband speeds in Blighty are on the up, communications watchdog Ofcom concluded in a report published this morning.

Of course, some might argue that it's impossible to define a national average given the disparity of broadband network connections across the UK.

Ofcom said that as of November last year, the country's average actual residential broadband speed stood at 7.6Mbit/s, compared with 6.2Mbit/s a year earlier.

Much of the increase was attributed to punters beefing up their packages by subscribing to faster broadband speeds with their providers.
